Sam Moyer joined Bridge Builders in September 2009. Sam was born in the state of New Hampshire, but spent the first 18 years of his life living in the neighbouring state of Vermont. His parents, Stephen and Naomi Moyer, met and married at a local Christian camp (Bethany Birches Camp) that is across the street from their current home. During his childhood he spent many summers as a camper at Bethany Birches and in his late teens as a counsellor. He attributes much of his Christian faith to his upbringing as a Mennonite and from his years at Bethany Birches as both a camper and counsellor. Sam also spent most of his winters on the ski slopes of the Killington resort and eventually took up being a ski instructor for children during his last year of school. Skiing is probably the sport that he is best at and ironically the one he has least been able to afford since leaving Vermont.
After high school Sam travelled to Goshen Indiana where he studied at Goshen College, a Mennonite university. While originally intending to study pre-engineering, he discovered a passion for psychology during his first semester. He switched his study focus to psychology, with an interest primarily in social psychology, and later added a focus in conflict studies. This combination of studies explains part of his interest in working for Bridge Builders.
After graduating from Goshen College in 2007, Sam travelled to Boulder in Colorado to volunteer within the Mennonite Voluntary Service programme. He worked for the Humane Society of Boulder Valley (a homeless shelter for animals) where he was able to apply some of the concepts he learned in psychology (such as classical and operant conditioning) to training animals. He rediscovered his love of animals while in Boulder and considers his time there a blessing from the knowledge he gained of animal welfare and animal training.
Through his late teens and early twenties Sam developed a passion for exercise and physical activity in general. He joined a cross country team while at Goshen, took up cycling when in Boulder, and currently is revisiting running while in London. Other exercise Sam enjoys includes hiking, walking, playing tennis, downhill skiing, and swimming. Someday he hopes to complete an ironman triathlon. Sam also enjoys playing guitar, card games, board games, and making camp fires.
Sam is excited about his time with Bridge Builders at the London Mennonite Centre. He hopes that it will widen his knowledge in conflict transformation and help him in deciding a future direction for his life.
